IXO is preparing the Mercedes-Benz 500 SL Koenig in 1:64 scale

IXO Modelcars has announced new tooling for the Mercedes-Benz 500 SL Koenig in 1:64 scale. Two versions are planned: one with the roof fitted and one with an open cabin.

The sample photographs show widened wheel arches, a pronounced front body kit, distinctive horizontal side strakes and wide wheels. The open version also features a large rear wing, while a close-up reveals the seats, steering wheel and dashboard.

The supplied announcement describes the car as the “1978 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL Koenig”. It does not specify a release date, product codes, prices or final model colours.

The real car’s history is linked to the German tuning company Koenig-Specials. Its founder Willy König began independent tuning in 1974 with a Ferrari 365 BB, later expanding to Mercedes-Benz and other marques. The company became particularly well known in the 1980s and early 1990s for radical conversions of expensive sports cars.

Koenig’s R107-generation SL featured striking wide bodywork with distinctive side strakes and large rear spoilers. The final gallery photograph shows a real 500 SL Koenig with a double rear wing and Recaro sports seats, offered at a Historics auction. Its equipment should not automatically be assumed to feature on IXO’s forthcoming miniature.

Historical note: 1978 is the designation used in IXO’s announcement. According to Mercedes-Benz Classic, the factory 500 SL debuted in 1980.
