The car’s story
The production Ferrari 250 GTO was first shown on 24 February 1962. The number 250 refers to the displacement of each cylinder: 12 × 250 cc = 3,000 cc, with an exact total displacement of 2,953.12 cc. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato. Three outstanding engineers developed the car together: Giotto Bizzarrini, Mauro Forghieri and Sergio Scaglietti. Only 33 Ferrari 250 GTOs were built. All have survived to the present day and are highly prized by collectors.
The 250 GTO had a three-litre V12 producing 290 hp at 7,400 rpm. Weighing just 880 kg, the rear-wheel-drive coupé reached 280 km/h and was one of the fastest cars in its class. It was a true sports car, winning the GT-class world championship three times between 1962 and 1964.
