Many collectors consider 1:87 the most practical scale for a home collection. Even a very large collection can easily fit into a small display area, including in a compact flat.

According to some accounts, 1:87 scale originated in Germany, and road vehicles in this format were introduced to complement model railways in dioramas. After all, transport-model collecting in Europe began with railways. Locomotives, carriages, complete trains, track and related railway accessories were produced in 1:87 scale.
