The car’s story
Bullitt was released in the United States in 1968, based on Robert L. Pike's Mute Witness. Its most famous scene is the San Francisco car chase: rebellious policeman Frank Bullitt, played by Steve McQueen, pursues two killers in a Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum with his Ford Mustang GT390 Fastback.
The spectacular sequence became a benchmark for many later films.
Ford supplied two Mustang GT390 V8s, whose engines, suspension and brakes were extensively modified by former racer Max Balchowsky. Two Dodge Charger V8s were bought directly from a dealer and received only minor suspension changes. Most stunts were performed not by the lead actor but by renowned car and motorcycle racer Bud Ekins. The chase lasts 9 minutes 42 seconds and took three weeks to film.
