The car’s story
In 1998 Puerto Rico’s police patrol fleet and its livery changed. The new fleet included the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, Mitsubishi Montero, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Honda Police CB500P, Harley Davidson Electra Glide, Ford Excursion and Ford Expedition.
The last two were used only by heavily armed SWAT assault units. The main colour was white with two stripes: starting at the rear, a blue stripe ran above a yellow one along the side, crossed it in the middle and continued below it towards the front. The logo appeared on the front doors, with Emergencia 9-1-1 (Emergency 9-1-1) on both rear doors. Patrol-unit numbers appeared on the front door, above the front wheels on both sides and on the roof behind the flashing light unit.
The fleet remained this way until 2003, when Governor Sila María Calderón added Ford Explorers and Ford Tauruses, replacing older Mitsubishi Monteros and Jeep Cherokees. Those older models were now intended only for special uses such as operations or public relations. Chevrolet Camaros were replaced by more than 75 Ford Mustangs. Motorcycles were changed too: the Honda Shadow replaced the Honda Police CB500P, while the Harley Davidson Electra Glide was reserved for veteran patrol officers and the governor’s escort.
The livery remained unchanged. Only the Highway Patrol used a different scheme, with grey as the base colour. The other distinction was that its blue and yellow lines were continuous: the blue line finished off the yellow one and then turned towards the front door.
