The car’s story
GAZ’s production range always included models with ambulance variants. The GAZ-12B ambulance was produced from 1951 to 1960.
Its chassis, transmission, running gear and engine were taken unchanged from the base model. Behind the driver’s seat, separated by a glass partition, was a medical compartment with space for a stretcher and two folding seats for medical staff. The stretcher and patient were loaded through the boot opening, which required no structural alterations.
The GAZ-12B was painted white or light beige. It was easy to identify in traffic by the roof lamp bearing a red cross and an additional searchlight on the left front wing. From 1962, all medical vehicles adopted a standard white-and-red colour scheme.
