The car’s story
The Chaika could not be bought on the open market: Soviet leaders presented it only as a gift. Fidel Castro, ballerina Galina Ulanova, writer Mikhail Sholokhov and the first woman cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, received theirs this way.
Luxury features included electric windows, a first for a Soviet car, operated by chrome switches on the doors. Exhaust pipes concealed in the ends of the rear bumper gave the Chaika a more dynamic silhouette.
