The car’s story
The GAZ-13 Chaika in Russian Souvenir appears on screen for only a few seconds, yet VVM commissioned a scale replica of it. It is unclear whether filming used an original or a repainted car. However, prototype “Э-2” in the same turquoise-and-milky-white finish was displayed at Expo ’58 in Belgium in 1958.
Archival documents and photographs suggest that around nine two-tone cars were built. Their paint schemes varied, but all combined two colours. Their main differences from production GAZ-13s were a gilded radiator grille and a seagull-shaped bonnet ornament.
