The car’s story
The special GAZ-24-02 Volga Aeroflot was created for the arrival of Air Force One carrying Richard Nixon at Minsk airport. It was intended to meet and guide mainly foreign aircraft. Demand was too low for series production, and the real example in the photograph was assembled at Factory No. 408. A total of 39 such vehicles were built.
The GAZ-24-02 carried two radios. The Palma operated on fixed two-way radiotelephone channels, while the R-860 transceiver used the VHF band. Its exterior was painted red and brown, as no standard specified the colours. A large illuminated ‘Follow me’ sign was mounted on the roof, with the same message in Russian on the rear window.
