The car’s story
The GAZ-24 Volga was used to escort the Olympic flame and athletes during the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It differed from the regular police version only in its paint scheme. There were at least ten cars in the Olympic convoy. The convoy also included several RAF-2908 minibuses, GAZ-24 and GAZ-24-02 Volgas, and a LAZ-5255 Karpaty bus. Like most of the vehicles, the white-and-gold GAZ-24 received registration plates from a special series bearing the Cyrillic letters ОЛМ.
The Olympic route was more than 5,000 km long and passed through Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and the USSR. The athlete running with the lit torch changed every kilometre. Transport of the Olympic flame was organised as a marathon torch relay involving 5,000 athletes, who changed over every four to five minutes. The journey from Olympia to Moscow lasted 30 days.
