The car’s story
The legendary GAZ-AA truck was popularly nicknamed the polutorka, or ‘one-and-a-half-tonner’, after its 1.5-tonne payload capacity. Early examples were almost exact licensed copies of the American 1929 Ford AA. However, the truck was repeatedly modernised during production, which began in January 1932 at the Nizhny Novgorod Automobile Plant, later renamed the Gorky Automobile Plant.
