The car’s story
The Lamborghini LM002 off-roader, nicknamed Rambo Lambo, debuted at the Brussels Motor Show in 1986. A total of 328 were made. Equipment included leather upholstery, air conditioning, a quality stereo and even tinted windows.
Pirelli developed two special tyre sets, one for desert sand and the other for everyday driving.
The military version dispensed with the main comforts but provided a machine-gun mounting point. The Libyan army bought about a hundred LM002s and Saudi Arabia's army forty. A few examples, apparently destined for Arab sheikhs, received a more powerful 7.2-litre L804 V12 producing 455 hp. The standard 5,167 cc engine came from the Countach.
The LMA002 was the prototype for Lamborghini's first production off-roader. Its military-vehicle story began in 1977 when the Cheetah entered a US Army tender; the prototype broke during army trials. The LM001, LMA002, LM003 and LM004 followed, but none entered series production.
