The car’s story
The Mercedes-Benz 770 Cabriolet, introduced in 1930, was also known as the Grosser or Großer Mercedes, meaning “Great Mercedes”. This truly large and luxurious car remained in production until 1943.
It frequently appears in pre-war and Second World War archive photographs and footage with senior German officials, including Adolf Hitler, Reich President Paul von Hindenburg and Hermann Göring. Foreign owners included Japan's Emperor Hirohito and the Pope.
This scale model represents the first generation, internally designated W07. It was built until 1938, with only 117 cars produced in eight years. The 7,655 cc straight-eight developed 150 hp at 2,800 rpm without supercharging. With the supercharger engaged, output rose to 200 hp, allowing a top speed of 160 km/h. Wheelbase was 3,750 mm, the gearbox had four speeds and suspension used semi-elliptic leaf springs.
