The car’s story
At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes presented the successor to the SLR McLaren: the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a spiritual heir to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL with its gullwing doors. The car went on sale in 2010 at a price of €175,000.
For the 2010 season, the SLS AMG became Formula 1’s official safety car.
The rear-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar, body code C197, was fitted with a longitudinally mounted 6.3-litre M159 petrol V8. It developed 571 hp at 6,800 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 4,750 rpm. The transmission was a seven-speed dual-clutch unit. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h took just 3.8 seconds, and top speed was 317 km/h. Fuel consumption was at least 20.6 l/100 km in the urban cycle, 13.2 l/100 km combined and 9.1 l/100 km extra-urban.
An interesting detail: a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was displayed at the presentation of Gran Turismo 5 during the 2009 Tokyo Game Show. The special Gran Turismo 5 Signature Edition also included a 1:43 scale SLS model carrying the game’s branding.
