The car’s story
The Mercedes Simplex 35 was the German manufacturer’s first car to state its engine power in its name. Its 5.9-litre engine (5,913 cc) did produce 35 hp at 1,000 rpm, giving a top speed of 72 km/h.
The four-cylinder engine ran much more quietly and smoothly than its rivals. It had T-head cylinders and side valves operated by an external camshaft.
The two-seat Mercedes 35 underwent its first tests in 1900, and the first car was sold in December. In 1901 the design was revised, adopting Wilhelm Maybach’s layout. He also incorporated his own inventions, a cooler and gearbox. An additional body section could turn the Simplex into an open four-seat convertible.
