The car’s story
The SLR supercar was created in 2003 following Mercedes-Benz’s proposal to join forces with its Formula One partner McLaren. The Mercedes SLR McLaren coupé combined the best traits of 1950s racing cars with technology from the Vodafone-McLaren team. The rear-wheel-drive car weighed 1,768 kg and used a mechanically supercharged 5.4-litre AMG petrol V8 producing 617 hp at 6,500 rpm and 780 Nm of peak torque. Top speed was 333 km/h, with 0–100 km/h taking just 3.8 seconds.
Mercedes SLR production was established in Woking, England, in 2004. Its arrow-shaped nose recalled the F1 Silver Arrow racer. The chassis was made almost entirely of carbon fibre with an attached aluminium frame. Side-exit exhausts allowed a completely flat underbody and improved aerodynamics. The rear spoiler could alter its angle to increase downforce when required.
