The car’s story
The two-seat Mercedes SLS AMG supercar was Mercedes AMG’s first independent project and its first car created from scratch. Its appearance echoes the legendary 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and inherits distinctive, recognisable elements. These include the long bonnet, short rounded tail and gullwing doors.
Although the SLS AMG was presented only in 2010, work on project W197 began in 2005. To reduce weight, the chassis, body panels, engine and monocoque were made of aluminium. It weighs just 1,695 kg, approximately 3 kg per horsepower.
