The car’s story
In 1947, the Moscow Small Car Plant began series production of its first post-war small car, the Moskvich-400. In 1954, the designation changed to 401-420, indicating a change of engine in the basic model. The car was popularly nicknamed the ‘Elephant’.
The new engine featured a revised cylinder head with vertically positioned spark plugs, a new camshaft, piston rings, cylinder liners, and new inlet and exhaust manifolds. Output consequently rose by 3 hp to 26 hp.
