The car’s story
The PMG-1 was a fire engine based on the GAZ-AA truck. Production began at Moscow Fire Engine Plant No. 6 in 1933. The chassis came from the KIM Moscow Automobile Assembly Plant and underwent extensive modifications. A power take-off was installed behind the gearbox, a D-20 centrifugal pump at the rear, and a wooden superstructure with side seats for six crew members on the body.
The PMG-1 carried a 146-litre tank, a dedicated compartment for firefighting equipment, several hose reels holding a total of 320 metres of hose, a three-section extending ladder, two fire extinguishers, digging tools and other firefighting accessories. This payload seriously limited the speed of the underpowered vehicle.
In 1934, 570 PMG-1s were produced. It received its official name only in 1941: 'GAZ Fire Engine, Model No. 1'.
