The car’s story
The SU-76M entered Red Army service in July 1943. GAZ and Factory No. 38 developed competing versions; the Kirov design was chosen and production began there. GAZ and Factory No. 40 in Mytishchi near Moscow later joined production. By its end in 1946, 13,732 vehicles had been built.
Armour on the hull and casemate front was 25–35 mm, sides 10–15 mm, rear, roof and floor 10 mm. Two liquid-cooled GAZ-203 carburetted inline six-cylinder engines provided a combined 140 hp at 3,400 rpm and 6,960 cc total displacement.
Crew: 4; combat weight: 10.5 tonnes; speed: 30 km/h; range: 320 km. Armament: a 76 mm ZIS-3 gun of the 1942 model. Ammunition: 60 rounds.
