IS-4 tank

The IS-4 tank entered Soviet Army service on 29 April 1946. Its development was initiated by the designers and management of the Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant. The vehicle was very expensive to manufacture, costing 994,000 roubles. A total of 219 examples had been built by 1 January 1949.

The IS-4 used a V-12 twelve-cylinder V-type engine. This liquid-cooled diesel displaced 38,880 cc and produced 750 hp at 2,100 rpm.

IS-4 armour thickness: front 140–160 mm, sides 160 mm, rear 100 mm, roof and floor 30 mm, and turret 170–250 mm.

Crew: 4; combat weight: 60 tonnes; maximum speed: 43 km/h; range: 170 km. Main armament: a 122 mm D-25 gun of the 1943 model and two 12.7 mm DShKM machine guns of the 1938/46 model. Ammunition: 30 rounds of 122 mm and 1,000 rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition.
