The car’s story
The ASU-85 airborne self-propelled gun has 45 mm frontal hull armour, 13 mm side armour and 6 mm on the rear, roof and belly. At the military’s request, an armoured roof was fitted over the fighting compartment in 1959 in view of possible nuclear warfare. Series production began in August 1961 at the Mytishchi Machine-Building Plant.
Engine: YaAZ-206V: liquid-cooled inline six-cylinder two-stroke diesel, 6,970 cc, 210 PS at 1,800 rpm.
Crew: 4; combat weight: 15.53 tonnes. Maximum speed: 45 km/h; range: 360 km.
Main armament: An 85 mm D-70 (2A15) gun; a 7.62 mm SGMT machine gun.
Ammunition: 45 gun rounds; 2,000 rounds of 7.62 mm.
