The car’s story
The BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher was intended to engage enemy personnel, unarmoured targets and lightly armoured vehicles. It was mounted on a Ural-375D truck chassis. Assembly was organised at the Lenin Plant in Perm. A total of 6,536 Grad launchers were produced for the Soviet Army, with another 646 for export. The last examples were assembled in 1988.
The BM-21 Grad entered service in 1963. Production of its 122 mm rockets was established at NPO Splav. Around three million rockets of this version were manufactured. A salvo could launch up to 40 rockets, with a maximum range of 20.4 km. Minimum firing range was 3,000 m, salvo duration was 20 seconds, and the vehicle had a crew of three.
