The car’s story
The BTR-80 armoured personnel carrier has 10 mm frontal hull armour, 7–9 mm side armour and just 7 mm at the rear and on the turret. Its pre-production designation was GAZ-5903. The first production vehicle left the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant in February 1984.
Engine: KamAZ-7403: turbocharged four-stroke V8 diesel, displacing 10,850 cc and producing 260 PS at 2,600 rpm.
Crew: 2; combat weight: 13.6 tonnes. Maximum speed: 80 km/h on land and 9 km/h afloat; land range: 600 km; endurance afloat: 12 hours.
Main armament: A 14.5 mm KPVT machine gun; a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun; six 81 mm smoke-grenade launchers.
Ammunition: 500 rounds of 14.5 mm ammunition; 2,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
