The car’s story
FAI stands for ‘Ford-A Izhora’. In 1932, that plant prepared a turreted armoured car on a passenger-car chassis for production. Series manufacture began at the Izhora plant in Leningrad in 1933. Assembly later moved to the Vyksa crushing and grinding equipment plant, and only domestically produced GAZ-A chassis were used from 1934. By 1936, 676 FAI armoured cars had been built.
Armour thickness: hull front, sides and rear, 6 mm; roof and floor, 3–4 mm; turret, 6 mm.
The FAI used a liquid-cooled GAZ-A inline four-cylinder carburettor engine. It displaced 3,280 cc and produced 40 hp at 2,200 rpm.
Crew: 2; combat weight: 2 tonnes; maximum speed: 80 km/h; range: 200 km. Main armament: a 7.62 mm DT machine gun. Ammunition carried: 1,323 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
