Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series 2009 (R230)

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is a high-performance SL65 AMG variant producing 660 hp. The manufacturer improved the turbochargers, increasing their capacity by 12%, and optimised the wastegate to raise engine output. The intake and exhaust systems were revised to improve response and reduce exhaust back pressure.

Lightweight composites, including carbon fibre, made the car 250 kg lighter than the standard SL65 AMG. A fixed roof replacing the heavier folding version also reduced weight while freeing space for the retractable rear spoiler.

The five-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS automatic offers C, S, M1 and M2 modes. In M2, shifts are 25% faster than in M1. Compared with the standard model, the front track grew by 97 mm and the rear by 85 mm.

Other changes include the retractable spoiler, a rear bumper with a diffuser, 265/35R19 front tyres on 19-inch wheels and 325/30R20 Dunlop Sport Maxx GT rear tyres on 20-inch wheels. Six-piston front brake calipers work with 390 × 36 mm discs, while four-piston rear calipers use 360 × 26 mm discs.

Deliveries began in November 2008. In 2009, the car lapped the Top Gear circuit in series 13, episode 3, recording 1:23.0, 0.1 seconds faster than the Ferrari F430.
