The car’s story
The T-34-85 has 45 mm armour on the hull sides, front and rear, 20 mm on the roof and belly and around 60–90 mm on the turret. It entered service under a State Defence Committee decree of 23 January 1944. Compared with the 1943 T-34-76, combat effectiveness improved significantly through a more powerful 85 mm gun and several design refinements. By 1950, over 35,000 had been built at Plant No. 112 Krasnoye Sormovo, the Comintern Ural Tank Plant No. 183 in Nizhny Tagil and Plant No. 174 in Omsk.
Engine: V-2-34: liquid-cooled four-stroke V12 diesel, 38880 cc; 400 PS at 1700 rpm.
Crew: 5; combat weight: 32 tonnes. Maximum speed: 55 km/h; range: 300 km.
Main armament: An 85 mm ZiS-S-53 model 1944 gun; two 7.62 mm DT model 1929 machine guns.
Ammunition: 55 gun rounds; 1,953 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
