The car’s story
The VAZ-2109 had independent MacPherson front suspension with struts, coil springs, an anti-roll bar and lower transverse arms with tie rods. Rear suspension used interconnected trailing arms, coil springs and dampers.
The five-door hatchback had a five-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on all forward gears. Brakes were front discs and rear drums. The cheaper version used a 1.3-litre inline, four-stroke, overhead-valve carburetted engine producing 64 hp at 5,600 rpm. Top speed was no more than 148 km/h; reaching 100 km/h took at least 13.5 seconds.
