The car’s story
The rapid-firing ZSU-23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft system entered Soviet Army service under a CPSU Central Committee decree of 5 September 1962. Final assembly was organised at the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant. Named Shilka, it performed its main task well, providing effective fire against aerial and ground targets while moving.
The ZSU-23-4 used a naturally aspirated, six-cylinder, four-stroke V-6R engine. This liquid-cooled diesel displaced 19,100 cc and produced 280 hp at 2,000 rpm. The Shilka has only bullet-resistant armour around its hull.
Crew: 4; combat weight: 19 tonnes; maximum speed: 50 km/h; range: 450 km. Main armament: a quadruple 23 mm AZP-23 Amur automatic cannon. Ammunition: 2,000 rounds in four belts.
