The car’s story
Development of the 2S6 Tunguska self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle began in 1976. Series production of the combined missile-and-gun systems was established at the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant. Components came from across the Soviet Union: guns from the Tula Mechanical Plant, missiles from Mayak in Kirov, sights from LOMO and self-propelled chassis from the Minsk Tractor Plant. The 2K22 Tunguska system entered service on 8 September 1982 by decree of the CPSU Central Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers.
The Tunguska used a V-84M30 four-stroke V12 engine. This liquid-cooled diesel produced 700 hp (515 kW). The 2S6 Tunguska’s armour provided protection against bullets only.
Crew: 4; combat weight: 34.8 tonnes; maximum speed: 65 km/h; range: 600 km. Main armament: two twin-barrel 30 mm 2A38 automatic cannons and eight launchers for 9M311 surface-to-air missiles. Ammunition carried: 1,936 gun rounds and eight surface-to-air missiles.
