The car’s story
The McLaren Honda MP4/5B was based on the successful 1989 MP4/5 chassis. Principal changes involved the engine, wings and rear bodywork to accommodate larger radiators. Neil Oatley was technical director. In 1990 Marlboro McLaren-Honda drivers Gerhard Berger of Austria and Ayrton Senna of Brazil secured the Constructors’ Championship. Senna also won the drivers’ standings, taking his second world title.
The MP4/5B used a carbon-fibre monocoque. The description calls its front and rear suspension active, with unequal-length arms. It had a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre Honda RA100E V10. The McLaren transmission is described as semi-automatic, with six forward gears and reverse. Weight did not exceed 505 kg. Shell supplied the fuel and Goodyear the tyres.
