The car’s story
The LuAZ-969M can be regarded as a civilian adaptation of the military TPK frontline transporter. The first vehicle designated 969M left the assembly line in 1973, while series production did not begin until 1979. It was popularly nicknamed the “Lunar Rover”.
In 1978, the 969M was ranked among Europe’s ten best off-road vehicles following the Turin Motor Show.
The Volyn was fitted with a MeMZ-969A engine: an air-cooled, four-stroke, carburetted V4. It produced 40 hp at 4,400 rpm from a displacement of 1,197 cc. Top speed was 85 km/h and fuel consumption was 10 l/100 km. The Lutsk-built off-roader had ground clearance of 280 mm beneath the front axle and 300 mm beneath the rear.
