BRDM-1

The first-generation armoured reconnaissance and patrol vehicle entered service by order of the USSR Minister of Defence dated 10 January 1958. Series production was established at the Gorky Automobile Plant, with the last BRDM-1 vehicles leaving the line in 1966. Development took place at GAZ from 1954 to 1957 under the direction of V. A.

Armour thickness: hull front, 7–11 mm; superstructure front, 11 mm; sides and rear, 7 mm; roof, 5 mm; floor, 4 mm.

The BRDM-1 used a liquid-cooled GAZ-40P inline six-cylinder carburettor engine. It displaced 3,480 cc and produced 85–90 hp at 3,400 rpm.

Crew: 2; troops carried: 3; combat weight: 5.6 tonnes. Maximum speed: 80 km/h on land and 9 km/h afloat. Range: 500 km on land and 85 km afloat. Main armament: a 7.62 mm SGMB machine gun, model 1949. Ammunition carried: 1,250 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
