The car’s story
The Countach was conceived as a striking, fast car. Nuccio Bertone’s coachbuilding studio entrusted the design to the young Marcello Gandini. The supercar’s initial form was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971. The body was revised following engineering advice to improve cooling for the engine and rear radiators. Additional air intakes were fitted, the wheel arches widened and broader tyres installed. The first production Countach LP400, hand-built like all those that followed, left the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory in 1974.
The LP500S version appeared in 1982, known in the USA as the LP5000S. It received a more powerful 4,754 cc V12. Top speed was 265 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h took 5.6 seconds. The LP500S also gained 30 mm of roof height, creating more room in the rather cramped cabin. The dashboard, seats, doors and gear lever were trimmed in leather, making the interior surprisingly luxurious.
