The car’s story
Production of the unique McLaren F1 supercar began in 1993 under Gordon Murray, with Peter Stevens responsible for its styling. The car still holds its own against modern sports cars. Its frame and body were made of carbon fibre, and it featured an active spoiler. It was expensive: each car required around 700 hours of work.
All McLaren F1s were connected to the manufacturer’s base in Woking, Britain, allowing remote diagnostics.
Buyers could add air conditioning and an audio system to the basic specification. The three-seat cabin placed the driver centrally, with passengers on either side.
The F1 had a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 48-valve V12 displacing 6,064 cc, based on the BMW 750i engine. It produced 627 hp at 7,400 rpm and 650 Nm of peak torque. Rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual gearbox and a weight of 1,100 kg enabled a top speed of 384 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.
A production run of 350 was planned. However, only 65 standard cars found owners, while another 34 were built for special events and racing.
