The car’s story
The popular Moskvich-412 succeeded the Moskvich-408. The changeover took place in stages, beginning in 1967 with body alterations for the new UZAM-412 engine, which required a revised engine bay and floor. The first cars left the Moscow assembly line in autumn 1967.
Moscow production continued until 1975, followed by assembly in Izhevsk until 1996.
The UZAM-412 was a water-cooled, inline four-cylinder, four-stroke carburettor engine of 1,478 cc. It developed 75 hp at 5,800 rpm and gave a top speed of 140 km/h. The M-412’s 1.5-litre engine is easily distinguished from its predecessor by its round air-filter housing and slightly tilted cylinder block. Particular attention was paid to meeting European safety-system standards during development.
