The car’s story
The Moskvich-427's story began with the introduction of the 412 engine in 1967, mass-produced at the Ufa Motor Plant from 1968. Engineers needed time to revise engine bays across the MZMA range; the 426 fitted with the new engine was renamed 427.
It was easily recognised inside by its gear lever on the floor tunnel.
In 1970 the basic saloon and estate received revised front styling and rectangular FER headlights. Passive safety improved with a padded dashboard, door trim and pillar coverings. During eight years, from 1968 to 1976, 32,849 examples of the 427 were built. Many 426 owners also fitted the more powerful 75 hp 412 engine during overhauls, replacing the 50 hp MZMA-408.
