The car’s story
GAZ-21 Volgas were widely used as taxis outside the USSR. Many served not only in socialist countries such as East Germany but also in Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Greece and Finland. They were valued for their spaciousness, robust construction and ability to cope with difficult roads.
There are reports that the Volga 21 held a leading position in Norway's dedicated taxi market during the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s. In 1958 one in four taxis there was a GAZ-21. In Belgium, Scaldia-Volga S.A. fitted Perkins diesels to taxis, adding the advantage of an economical engine.
