The car’s story
A new gearbox was designed specifically for the ZAZ-966's Melitopol-built MeMZ-968 engine, displacing 1,198 cc and producing 41 hp. The engine remained at the rear, while the spare wheel and battery stayed in the luggage compartment, which was larger than in the 965 family.
The MeMZ-968 was an air-cooled, carburetted four-stroke V4 with overhead valves. It allowed a top speed of 120 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 28 seconds. Fuel consumption at an average speed of 80 km/h was 6.2 litres per 100 km.
