The car’s story
The ZIS-112 sports car was built in 1951 as a single example on a ZIS-110 chassis. The 2,450 kg car received an experimental 6,005 cc engine designed by Vasily Fyodorovich Rodionov. This four-stroke engine had eight cylinders, two carburettors, two oil pumps, an oil cooler, overhead inlet valves and side exhaust valves. Maximum output was 182 hp at 3,500 rpm, and top speed did not exceed 204 km/h. A three-speed gearbox was fitted.
The enclosed three-seat coupé was almost six metres long, largely because of its long inline engine. This also prevented a satisfactory weight distribution, and the heavy front end encouraged skidding. The ZIS-112 first tried the white-and-blue two-tone livery that later became traditional for the factory team. Tests showed, however, that it failed to distinguish itself even in straight-line races on the Minsk highway.
