Bburago was founded by Mario Basenna in 1974 to produce scale model cars. Its headquarters were in Malgora, Italy. Production continued uninterrupted until 2005 and resumed only in 2007. The company was originally named Martoys.
It began with 1:24 models of well-known European cars, featuring detailed interiors and opening body parts. A 1:18 range of rare vintage cars was later developed specifically for collectors, followed by models in 1:43.
Bburago models are now made in Thailand at Maisto's facilities; Maisto acquired the company in 2005.
