BTR-70

The BTR-70 armoured personnel carrier was a substantial development of the BTR-60. It addressed shortcomings revealed during military service and improved combat performance. The BTR-70 entered service in 1972; series production began at GAZ in 1976 and at the Arzamas automotive parts plant in 1981.

The BTR-70 had 8–10 mm of armour on the front of the hull, 6 mm on the sides and 6 mm on the turret.

The vehicle used two ZMZ-4905 eight-cylinder carburettor engines with liquid cooling. Their combined output was 240 hp (2 × 120 hp) at 3,400 rpm, with a total displacement of 8,500 cc (2 × 4,250 cc).

Crew: 2; troops carried: 8; combat weight: 11.5 tonnes. Maximum speed: 80 km/h on land and 10 km/h afloat. Land range: 400 km; endurance afloat: 12 hours. Main armament: a 14.5 mm KPVT machine gun and a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun. Ammunition carried: 500 rounds of 14.5 mm and 2,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
