GAZ Volga M24 1967

A. M. Nevzorov was the lead engineer on the Volga 24 project. Leonid Tsikolenko and Nikolai Kireyev styled the GAZ-24 saloon, with all work overseen by GAZ chief designer Alexander Dmitriyevich Prosvirin.

The GAZ-24 used the carburetted 24D straight-four of 2,445 cc, producing 98 hp at 4,500 rpm. It gave the 1,420 kg saloon a top speed of 145 km/h. Acceleration to 100 km/h took a lengthy 22 seconds.

Front suspension was independent, with coil springs and transverse arms; the rear used a rigid axle on longitudinal semi-elliptic leaf springs. Telescopic hydraulic dampers were fitted front and rear. The drum service brakes had automatic adjustment, separate hydraulic circuits and a hydraulic vacuum booster. A mechanically operated parking brake acted on the rear wheels. The four-speed manual gearbox had synchromesh on all forward gears.
