The car’s story
The Mercedes C111 prototype was unveiled at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show. The bright orange two-seat sports car, with its gullwing doors, took centre stage on the German company's stand. Unfortunately, it was never intended for series production: Mercedes used it to test new technologies and materials.
The sports car used a steel frame supporting a body made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic. The Mercedes C111's rotary engine was mounted longitudinally in the middle of the car. Its four rotors gave a total displacement of 2,400 cc. Maximum output was 350 hp at 7,000 rpm, with peak torque of around 400 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Weighing 1,240 kg, the prototype reached 300 km/h and accelerated to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The rear-wheel-drive car was equipped with a five-speed gearbox.
