The car’s story
The minibus was fitted with a 150 hp engine from the ZIL-130. Most mechanical components came from the ZIL-111 on which it was based. The Yunost also inherited a two-speed automatic transmission.
A distinctive feature was the panoramic cabin glazing and large tinted windows in the sloping roof sections, which provided excellent visibility. There was also a large sliding roof hatch measuring 183 × 68 cm.
The ZIL-118’s exterior was designed by Alexander Olshanetsky and Erik Szabo. Tatyana Kiselyova designed the interior and also suggested the name “Yunost”, meaning “Youth”, which aptly reflected the age of most of the minibus’s creators.
The Yunost could accommodate 17 passengers comfortably. Over the entire production run, 20 ZIL-118s were assembled almost entirely by hand, including two medical variants. A lack of funds and of interest from the USSR’s senior party leadership prevented the Yunost from entering assembly-line production.
