The car’s story
The E30-generation BMW M3 was produced from 1986 to 1991. A total of 600 uprated M3 Sport Evolution coupés were built. The first special versions appeared in April 1988 with an engine tuned to 220 hp; 500 were made, each priced at 85,000 marks. After the standard engine's output rose to 215 hp in 1989, production of the road-going M3 Sport Evolution began in March 1990. Its 2.5-litre engine produced 238 hp and could propel the lightweight sports coupé to 250 km/h.
Remarkably, BMW produced an uprated version of the already high-performance M3. This was done to obtain eligibility for production-car racing. The engine inherited from the base model was further tuned and could be recognised by its red spark-plug cover. Ground clearance was reduced by 10 mm and the final-drive ratio was changed. Aerodynamics were also revised, with a front spoiler and an adjustable rear wing. The ‘Monza’ setting provided maximum speed and minimum downforce; Normal balanced downforce and top speed; ‘Nurburgring’ provided maximum downforce and the lowest top speed. The BMW M3 Sport Evolution was fitted with high-speed 224/45 R16 tyres.
