The car’s story
The BMW M5 is a modified version of the BMW 5 Series. Development of the E28-generation M5 was carried out by Motorsport GmbH. The high-performance version of the standard saloon debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1985. Initially, no more than 500 cars were planned, but demand was so strong that the final production total reached 2,241. All the cars were assembled by hand at the Garching factory near Munich.
Without the optional M-package, the high-performance version was difficult to distinguish visually from the comfortable standard executive saloon. The package included a small rear spoiler, aerodynamic side skirts and new bumpers. The BMW M5 E28's DOHC straight-six engine displaced 3,453 cc and produced 277 hp for the US market or 286 hp, with a maximum engine speed of 7,000 rpm.
Inside the sporting M5, the instrument panel, gear lever knob and three-spoke M steering wheel carried Motorsport logos. Recaro and Motorsport jointly developed seats specifically for the M5 E28, with enhanced lateral support and a patch featuring the Motorsport tricolour.
