The car’s story

The Borgward Isabella Coupé replaced the Hansa 1500/1800 and became the first post-war West German car. In the opinion of many motorists, in 1957 there was no more beautiful or striking car in either East or West Germany. The petrol engine fitted to the coupé produced 75 horsepower.

Elisabeth Borgward received the first Isabella coupé as a gift back in 1955, two years before the model entered series production. Production of the standard Isabella had begun in 1954, while the coupé did not enter production until 1957. It was a 2+2 coupé: its shorter passenger compartment meant dispensing with a full-size rear bench seat.
