The car’s story
The first generation of the Lincoln Continental was produced from 1939 to 1948. Eugene Gregory developed the prototype for Henry Ford’s son Edsel, following Edsel’s own concept. The Continental used the Lincoln Zephyr platform. It is said that Edsel conceived the idea in the early 1910s, when he became interested in European car design, or after his father appointed him president of Lincoln.
The first Lincoln Continental was ready in early 1939, built for the company president’s personal use. It looked fast and sporting while retaining elegant lines, and drew admiration from onlookers. All the cars were built by hand using Lincoln Zephyr components, including transverse leaf-spring suspension and a three-speed manual gearbox. Of the 403 cars produced, 339 were convertibles with electrically operated roofs. The 4,378 cc V12 developed 120 hp and was considered short-lived, prompting owners to fit Chrysler and Cadillac engines to their Continentals.
