The car’s story
Design work on the GAZ-67 began in 1943 under engineer Grigory Vasserman. The 67B designation became firmly established after the model was upgraded in 1944. During development, the Soviet jeep regained the 1,446 mm track width usual for the factory’s passenger cars. Its frame was substantially strengthened, and additional front and rear wings were fitted to the body. A new carburettor increased engine output to 54 hp. Most body panels did not require expensive stamping dies, as reflected in the vehicle’s simple, straight-sided shape.
The vehicle was designed as a mass-produced off-roader for mid-ranking commanders, reconnaissance troops and signallers, and even for artillery units towing light and medium guns. After the war, the GAZ-67B found demand among geologists, local police officers, agronomists, agricultural machinery operators, communications workers and collective-farm chairmen. Production continued until 1953. Over ten years, 92,843 GAZ-67 and GAZ-67B vehicles were built, including 14,502 in 1953.
